Newcastle Airport air traffic controllers keep jobs after drink-driving convictions.

Posted on June 29th, 2010

The CAA has allowed 3 air traffic controllers who were convicted of drink-driving convictions to keep their jobs. However airline watchdogs have called on the industry to dismiss controllers that have been convicted of a drink-driving offence.

The three staff at Newcastle Airport were caught drink-driving and reported to the Civil Aviation Authority. Another air traffic controller quit after being caught over the limit on the way to work.

The CAA does have the power to dismiss staff but this didn’t happen in these cases. The CAA instead put these employees through a Substance Misuse Clinic for assessment and determined that these were one off offences and there were no issues with alcoholic addiction.

Newcastle Airport to add even more opportunities to recycle

Posted on June 29th, 2010

Newcastle Airport has stepped up its recycling and teamed up with a number of organisations including Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE), WRAP and Recoup to join a national program called Recycle Zone. Newcastle Airport have installed unique bins that offer on the go recycling and have been specifically designed for the airport.

Helen Hughes, who is environmental adviser at Newcastle International, said: “We’re continuously looking into new ways to improve our recycling procedures and are delighted with the introduction of the new on-the-go recycle units, we’re confident they will be a success.

“The terminal is a vast public space which millions of passengers travel through each year; we need to ensure that people find it as easy as possible to recycle before they jet off. Through the work with Coca-Cola and Recoup, we hope to see many new innovation initiatives to follow in the future which will benefit the environment.”

A spokesperson from WRAP said: “WRAP supports investment in on the go recycling. We want to make it easier for people to recycle, wherever they are. Newcastle International should be congratulated for taking the lead on this important agenda.”

Newcastle Airport pride themselves on being environmentally friendly with their rubbish and recycle as much waste as possible including litter collected in the terminal building and the plastic bottles confiscated during security searches. Recycling rates are increasing year on year and Newcastle Airport’s administration block is also a bin-free environment, with all rubbish collected through a central recycling system located in the corridors.

Volcanic ash causes problems at Newcastle Airport

Posted on April 15th, 2010

Travellers from Newcastle Airport are facing delays today as Volcanic ash from a recently erupted volcano in Iceland spreads across the UK. The ash cloud has disrupted all flights at Newcastle airport where all arrivals were cancelled and all outbound flights either cancelled or subject to indefinite delay. A BAA spokesman said: “Passengers intending to fly today are asked to contact their airline for further information and should expect disruption in the coming hours.”

Met Office forecaster Philip Avery said the ash could take several days to clear. He said: “It is showing up on imagery at the moment, extending down as far as the Faroes but it looks as though the wind will drag it a good deal further south.

“Nats has good cause to be very cautious about this because in about 1982 a British Airways jumbo had the unnerving experience of having all four engines shut down as it flew through a plume of volcanic ash.”

The volcanic ash can effect aircrafts engines clogging them up and causing problems during flight. If you have travelled to Newcastle Airport and are facing delays you may want to look at booking a Newcastle Airport Lounge to add extra comfort while your flight may be delayed.

Newcastle Airport bosses anger passengers by moving free parking zone

Posted on April 10th, 2010

Bosses at Newcastle Airport have angered travellers and taxi drivers by moving a free 5 minute parking drop off area from the front of the terminals to a new location 3 minutes walk from the terminals. Although increasing the free time to 15 minutes and charging just £1 for up to 20 minutes customers aren’t happy as it now takes that long to unpack bags and walk to the terminal and back. Hackney carriage Taxi drivers aren’t allowed to pass the charge onto their customers either.

Graeme Mason, head of planning and corporate affairs at Newcastle Airport, said: “We’re one of the very few airports of our size that has been able to not only retain a free period but increase it.

“We’ve listened to customers and offsite taxi drivers and they’ve been telling us that the five-minute period that is currently available in front of the terminal building isn’t long enough.

“So we’ve put in place a plan that will allow us to extend the period to 15 minutes.

“If we were to extend the existing provision immediately in front of the terminal building to 15 minutes, we wouldn’t be able to accommodate it because of the very limited space.”
