Newcastle Airport have to pull out of partnering schools bid to become government sponsored
Posted on January 29th, 2010
Newcastle Airport yesterday had to pull out of becoming a prospective partner for a top performing high school. Governors made the decision to delay their bid to become one of the Government’s flagship foundation trust schools, at 1,100-student Ponteland High in Northumberland.
Ponteland High School is one of the best performing state schools in the North East and is committed to progressing with the plan. It is unfortunate that Newcastle Airport has had to pull out but Chris Sanders, who is head of aviation development at the airport explained that following a review of resources Newcastle Airport could not guarantee the support and resources the school would require.

Newcastle International Airport celebrating its 75th anniversary this year
Posted on January 29th, 2010
Newcastle International Airport marks an important milestone this year, celebrating its 75th Anniversary. Newcastle Airport is marking the celebration with a series of events and is unveiling a new logo for the airport.
It is also hoping to speed its recovery out of recession and help the North East as well. This comes on the back of news that new flights are being added to Newcastle Airport’s already prolific portfolio.
Chief Executive Dave Laws predicted good things for Newcastle Airport saying “This is a massive year for us.
“We first opened on July 26 1935 and now we are in a position where we have the capability to process 7.5 million passengers a year, fly people to more than 80 destinations worldwide and play a significant role in the regional economy.
“I think this is an exceptionally proud year for everybody connected with the airport and we have a series of events planned and what we want to do is involve as many people in our celebrations as possible.”
“Last year, everybody suffered from the recession. We are sitting here watching and waiting like everyone else to see what this year brings.
“But our hope is that we will get 2% growth, compared to last year and obviously, growth for us in our 75th year is very special, in the same way that any new routes we add this year will be special.
“But I have always said growth has to be sustainable and I have a responsibility when I put routes in to try and ensure they are sustainable.
“That might not be everyone’s cup of tea but it is mine and I am not going to do things I can’t sustain.”
“We will be releasing a commemorative book and an exclusive exhibition of archive film, photography and memorabilia will be on display at Newcastle City Library, with the possibility of a touring exhibition around other libraries during the summer months.
“On the anniversary day itself, July 26, a number of our airline partners will be marking the occasion by operating aircraft rarely seen at Newcastle, which we hope will appeal to aviation enthusiasts and the general public alike.
“The airport’s management team will also take part in a 75-mile walk in support of our nominated charity, the NSPCC.”

Large haul of illegal tablets siezed at Newcastle Airport
Posted on January 12th, 2010
UK Border Agency seized large haul of illegally imported tablets at Newcastle Airport last week. The haul which included 80,000 Sildenafil tablets (which can be sold as Viagra) was seized by officers carrying out checks on freight coming into the airport by secure road transport having originally been flown into London Heathrow from Mumbai.
The confiscated tablets weigh about 170Kg and were being transported as food additives, however they were found to be the illegal drug, Sildenafil.
Fred Simmons who is Assistant Director of the UK Border Agency, welcomed the seizure saying: “Medicines smuggled into the country illegally are often found to be counterfeit and as such pose a huge health risk to the end user.
“Anyone tempted to buy these illegitimate products, whether over the Internet or otherwise, should also remember that the gangs smuggling these goods often have links to serious organised crime.
“This haul shows how robust the checks we carry out at Newcastle Airport are. We search for a range of items, including drugs and weapons as well as cigarettes and tobacco, to keep our border secure.
“The UK Border Agency, in partnership with other agencies, will not hesitate to take strong action against those involved in smuggling.”
The Head of Enforcement at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, Mick Deats, added: “The dangers of buying medicines from illegitimate sources are that you just don’t know what you are taking.
“The dosages could be either too high or too low, contain no pharmaceutical ingredient or a totally different ingredient to that stated.
“Illegal suppliers have no quality control or standards to abide by, and people who purchase medicine from these sources will never know where the tablets they are putting in their mouths have actually originated or what they contain.
“If customers could see the filthy conditions in which some of these medicines were being transported, stored and handled, they wouldn’t touch them.”

Weather causing problems at Newcastle Airport
Posted on January 6th, 2010
Snow is causing disruptions to flights at Newcastle Airport. The airport has been closed this morning to clear snow from the runway. It is unsure yet whether flights will be able to depart and land. We would advise anyone travelling from Newcastle Airport to check with their airline as to what the current situation is and if the flights are OK leave plenty of time for getting to the airport on time. Similarly if you are travelling to the airport to pick up people on incoming flights it is worth checking to see if the flight is arriving and is on time.

Collapse of holiday firm leaves passengers unable to fly out from Newcastle Airport
Posted on December 21st, 2009
The collapse of a holiday firm has left some passengers, flying out of Newcastle Airport looking for winter sun, distraught.
About 70 passengers were flying to Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt for a Christmas break on Saturday but were not able to fly due to the collapse of Allbury Travel Group which traded through Libra Holidays, JetLife and Argo Holidays. The group went into administration.
Some passengers found out before they made the journey to the airport but others arrived with no idea they wouldn’t be able to fly.
A spokesperson for Newcastle Airport said: “Fingers crossed some got the message before they got to the airport. We’re terribly sorry that customers flying from Newcastle have had their travel plans disrupted. It must be absolutely heartbreaking, especially at Christmas when you are wanting to get away.”
The airport is advising people who were booked to fly from Newcastle Airport to contact ABTA Ltd (formerly the Association of British Travel Agents).
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is also telling people with bookings not to go to the airport, but to submit a claim to the CAA. Claim forms are available on the ATOL website at www.atol.org.uk and Allbury customers can get more information on 0844 856 2585.

New firm moves near to Newcastle Airport boosting local industry
Posted on December 21st, 2009
A company which specializes in green energy and has recently relocated to the North East believes changes in regulations will increase sales to over £40m in the next 5 years.
Vertical Wind Energy who make wind turbines believe the growth in revenue will happen by 2014.
The company was started in Northern Ireland and moved to Prestwick Park which is near Newcastle Airport, in the past few weeks.
The regulation change means green power generators will receive a fee from utility suppliers through a new levy.
VWE chief executive Tony Gordon said: “These are exciting time for micro-generators. We expect sales to grow quickly over the coming years.
“Supermarkets such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s are already using this technology and we expect to see our products stimulate a lot of interest in the farming community.
“Our new, larger, 6kw turbine will come to the market in February and we expect this to be of interest to the larger users.
“We will create jobs in the region over the coming years and within five years we believe we can achieve annual sales of around £44m and we could have around 40 employees in the North East by then”
This is good news for the area and VWE established its base near Newcastle Airport with the help of £1.2m of funding led by Newcastle-based venture capital firm NorthStar Equity Investors (NSEI) and North East venture capital syndicate represented by Tiger Corporate Finance.
The company hope to increase jobs in the area as its sales improve which is great news for the North East.

Court rules that strike by British Airways cabin crew isn’t legal
Posted on December 17th, 2009
Passengers flying from Newcastle Airport over the festive period will be relieved after a High Court ruling that the union UNITE did not properly ballot it’s members therefore declaring that the strike called over the Christmas period is not legal. While British Airways are obviously pleased at this ruling it also means passengers planning to travel with British Airways from Newcastle Airport will be equally pleased after flights were threatened with cancellation.
The ballot was invalid because UNITE had balloted members who had already accepted voluntary redundancy from British Airways which makes them illegible to vote to strike. The judge, Mrs Justice Cox, said “A strike of this kind over the 12 days of Christmas is fundamentally more damaging to BA and the wider public than a strike taking place at almost any other time of the year.”
