A Travel Guide to Newcastle

One thousand years ago Newcastle-upon-Tyne was a defensive fort on Hadrian`s Wall and over the years it has grown into a large industrialised city, with a thriving tourist industry. Located in the north east of England, there is much for the visitor to see and do in and around Newcastle. Newcastle`s attractive and trendy Quayside is a great place to socialise with lively bars and restaurants overlooking the Tyne River. No matter what the visitor`s culinary tastes there are restaurants offering food from all around the world, including, Italian, Chinese, Indian, French and Spanish. The Quayside is where visitors to Newcastle can find the best night clubs including the famous Baja Beach Club. There are many attractions worth visiting in Newcastle. There are organised and guided city walks and a sight seeing bus trip available for an overall view of the city, as well as a sight seeing 3 hour river cruise, from the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and Tyne Gorge down to the mouth of the river. For football fans St James Park is a great venue for a Newcastle United match.

There are several art galleries and museums in the area and BALTIC is a contemporary building housing modern art on the south bank of the river Tyne. For a fun family outing the Centre For Life is a great place for the children to enjoy travelling back in time to meet some ancestors. The Discovery Museum is the most popular museum for a family outing and here the Science Maze has interactive exhibits to amuse the kids, as well as a history of the area going back to Roman times. There is often excitement at Gosforth Park, the famous race course just minutes from Newcastle. Here the visitor can enjoy the race, takes the kids for a round of mini golf and take in the wonderfully tranquil surroundings.

Winters can be cold in the north east, but this does not stop visitors arriving for short breaks or weekend stays. Spring and autumn are great times to visit Newcastle as the surrounding countryside looks beautiful and in the summer months visitors can combine a stay in the city with a few days exploring the lovely coastline and quiet beaches. Visitors can travel to Newcastle by road, train or air. Newcastle has an International Airport as well, giving connections worldwide via a great range of flights. If you are looking to fly from Newcastle Airport we do some great deals on Newcastle Airport Parking. Newcastle airport is situated just 10 miles from the city centre and there are currently 15 flights per day to London. There is plenty of hotel accommodation close to the airport. If driving from the south the A1 and A19 dual carriageways provide the visitor with excellent views of the famous statue, The Angel of the North. Direct trains run from London and the south as well as Scotland and the Trans-Pennine rail line links Manchester, Leeds and Bradford to the city. There are many stylish Newcastle hotels as well as reasonably priced Bed and Breakfasts available and self catering holiday accommodation for those looking for more independence.

A company that specializes in biometrics and identity management systems has won the rights to a contract at Newcastle International Airport to manage passenger flow around the airport. Human Recognition Systems will install their MFlow software at the airport and it will used to monitor exit routes from both international and domestic baggage collection areas so enhance passenger throughput and security. This is key for the airport as passenger numbers increase with over 5 million people using the airport last year.

MFlow uses smart surveillance CCTV and system controlled doors to manage passenger flow and identify the flow of people, including people who are moving in the wrong direction or standing still, potentially blocking exit areas from the baggage hall. The software can also alert security staff to unattended objects.

Jim Slevin, who is business development consultant at Human Recognition Systems, said: “We’ve been working with the aviation industry for the last five years to understand how biometrics and video analytics can improve security, streamline processes and enhance passenger experience.”

This is good news for Newcastle Airport as it establishes itself as a major UK hub in the airline industry. If you are travelling from Newcastle Airport over the coming half term and want a good airport parking rate get a quote from our Newcastle Airport Parking system.

Some unique photos have been found of Newcastle Airport. Tim Callaghan was at Newcastle Airport in 1977 when a rare visit by one of the most powerful men on the planet occurred. Tim was studying graphic design at Newcastle Polytechnic and managed to get ring side seats to a visit by then US president Jimmy Carter. The US president made a 4 hours top off in Tyneside to accept a Freeman of Newcastle honour by Prime Minister of the day Jim Callaghan and Mayor of Newcastle, Hugh White.

Tim who lived in Newcastle at the time, but now lives in London says: “I always knew about the shots but over the years I had forgotten about them.

“At Christmas, I was at my mother’s house and I found a folder with the pictures in. It was definitely a trip down memory lane and I knew people in Newcastle would find the shots interesting as it was such a big day for the North East.

“On the day, I remember being let inside an inner cordon by security, they must have thought I was a professional photographer when I wasn’t and I stood in front of a small TV tower and film crew from Pathe News.

“I was literally only about 50ft from the President.

“I borrowed a Pentax, which is a really old-fashioned camera and a light meter from our Photography Dept and took some photos.

“I had then developed and printed them myself in our dark room.”

Weather has caused problems across the country recently but thanks to a dedicated team at Newcastle Airport the International airport was closed for only 17 hours out of nearly 600 in which snow could have caused problems.

This cost the airport more the £500,000 but this is little cost in ensuring passengers get away on time. Staff were working around the clock to keep the airport open as much as possible and chief executive Dave Laws paid tribute saying: “All our staff put in an enormous amount of effort to keep the runway, taxiways and aircraft stands operational, as well as keeping our customers fully informed. I have worked at the airport for 30 years and don’t think I have ever seen weather conditions quite as severe as they were in recent weeks.

“Colleagues have on many occasions worked around the clock to ensure that this weather disrupted as few passengers as possible over the Christmas and New Year period, and I am extremely proud of their efforts and commitment.

“Of course, we are still in the middle of winter and this current thaw will not make us complacent. We remain on standby and I am sure our staff will respond equally efficiently if snow hits the region again.”

Newcastle Airport have some snow ploughs on standby in case the weather deteriorates again but rest assured they will do everything in their powers to keep the airport open.

A classic plane in British aviation may be making its way back to Sunderland over the next two years. The Trident Jet, made by Hawker Siddeley could regularly be seen flying between Newcastle Airport and London Heathrow until they were phased out and replaced by more modern aircraft.

The Trident was built to meet the requirements of the then British Airways, BEA (British European Airways) and was distinctive in its design. Only 3 remain today at Durham Tees Valley Airport and one enthusiast wants to move one of those to Sunderland at the North East Aircraft Museum. The project will be an expensive one as the aircraft needs to be broken down, transported and rebuilt however a group of six aviation enthusiasts are hoping to do just that.

Ponteland High School is one of the best performing state schools in the North East and is committed to progressing with the plan. It is unfortunate that Newcastle Airport has had to pull out but Chris Sanders, who is head of aviation development at the airport explained that following a review of resources Newcastle Airport could not guarantee the support and resources the school would require.
