This week sees a major milestone at Newcastle International Airport. KLM, the dutch carrier is celebrating 25 years flying from the North East’s number one airport. KLM started flying from Newcastle Airport in 1984 and now, with it’s partner airline Air France, offer up to six daily flights to Amsterdam or Paris giving it’s customers access to two of Europe’s major long-haul hubs.
Pieter Elbers, Senior Vice President Network & Alliances at KLM, says “It’s a fantastic milestone for KLM and one which clearly highlights the ongoing demand and support from business and leisure travellers in the North East for a seamless global travel service from the convenience of their local airport.”
David Laws, who is Chief Executive of Newcastle International Airport said, “This is a very prestigious event for both our airport and the airline. The 25 years since this airline first touched down at Newcastle are a testament to our great working relationship and partnership with KLM.
“Amsterdam opens up the world from our region, and we look forward to many more years of working and growing our respective businesses.”
Stacey Hall, One North East Director of Communications and Tourism also says: “We congratulate KLM on 25 years of valued service to the region. Excellent global connectivity forms a major and attractive part of our offering to both businesses and tourists.
“We continue to see a rise in tourists to the North East with tourism currently worth almost GBP4bn to the region’s economy and employing more than 60,000 people.”
Highlighting the importance of this route to international travel is the fact that over half of KLM traffic from the North East is long-haul with Hong Kong being the most popular long-haul destination.
