Newcastle Airport bosses anger passengers by moving free parking zone

Posted on April 10th, 2010

Bosses at Newcastle Airport have angered travellers and taxi drivers by moving a free 5 minute parking drop off area from the front of the terminals to a new location 3 minutes walk from the terminals. Although increasing the free time to 15 minutes and charging just £1 for up to 20 minutes customers aren’t happy as it now takes that long to unpack bags and walk to the terminal and back. Hackney carriage Taxi drivers aren’t allowed to pass the charge onto their customers either.

Graeme Mason, head of planning and corporate affairs at Newcastle Airport, said: “We’re one of the very few airports of our size that has been able to not only retain a free period but increase it.

“We’ve listened to customers and offsite taxi drivers and they’ve been telling us that the five-minute period that is currently available in front of the terminal building isn’t long enough.

“So we’ve put in place a plan that will allow us to extend the period to 15 minutes.

“If we were to extend the existing provision immediately in front of the terminal building to 15 minutes, we wouldn’t be able to accommodate it because of the very limited space.”

Newcastle International Airport celebrating its 75th anniversary this year

Posted on January 29th, 2010

Newcastle International Airport marks an important milestone this year, celebrating its 75th Anniversary. Newcastle Airport is marking the celebration with a series of events and is unveiling a new logo for the airport.

It is also hoping to speed its recovery out of recession and help the North East as well. This comes on the back of news that new flights are being added to Newcastle Airport’s already prolific portfolio.

Chief Executive Dave Laws predicted good things for Newcastle Airport saying “This is a massive year for us.

“We first opened on July 26 1935 and now we are in a position where we have the capability to process 7.5 million passengers a year, fly people to more than 80 destinations worldwide and play a significant role in the regional economy.

“I think this is an exceptionally proud year for everybody connected with the airport and we have a series of events planned and what we want to do is involve as many people in our celebrations as possible.”

“Last year, everybody suffered from the recession. We are sitting here watching and waiting like everyone else to see what this year brings.

“But our hope is that we will get 2% growth, compared to last year and obviously, growth for us in our 75th year is very special, in the same way that any new routes we add this year will be special.

“But I have always said growth has to be sustainable and I have a responsibility when I put routes in to try and ensure they are sustainable.

“That might not be everyone’s cup of tea but it is mine and I am not going to do things I can’t sustain.”

“We will be releasing a commemorative book and an exclusive exhibition of archive film, photography and memorabilia will be on display at Newcastle City Library, with the possibility of a touring exhibition around other libraries during the summer months.

“On the anniversary day itself, July 26, a number of our airline partners will be marking the occasion by operating aircraft rarely seen at Newcastle, which we hope will appeal to aviation enthusiasts and the general public alike.

“The airport’s management team will also take part in a 75-mile walk in support of our nominated charity, the NSPCC.”
